Am I alone in this addiction? I seriously doubt it. I believe most everything that traumatizes people in there lives is caused by some addiction or another or a combination of several addictions. Anytime I have struggled with diabetes I have been a victim of my own addictions – from food addictions to the emotional addictions that drive them. If people are going to control and eradicate disease from their lives they must control and eradicate their addictions first.
The tractor beam
My favorite movie of all time is Star Wars. In that movie, there is a something called a "tractor beam", which is a device used by space ships to pull in other space ships toward them for capture. It's kind of like using a magnet to attract a peace of metal.
No matter how strong-willed I feel, at any moment, there always seems to be a tractor beam like pull toward high carbohydrate, processed food. In Star Wars, when Han Solo and his ship, the Millennium Falcon, get caught in the tractor beam of the death star, Han solo says in his toughness, "There not going to get me without a fight!"
Although Obi Wan Kenobi informs Han Solo that there are alternatives to fighting, I believe when it comes to our food addictions we get to put up a fight. And, as Han Solo also says, "Bring it on, I prefer a straight fight to all this sneaking around!", we get to fight straight on in the face of our addictions.
And know this, the word addiction can have whatever feeling you attach to it. For most people, I would make the assumption that the word addiction has a negative feeling attached to it. It doesn't have to. YOU decide how it feels to you. If you have food addictions, big deal. Identify them and deal with them. Find what works for you and do it.
Take a moment today to identify the addictions in your life and fight them straight on.
