When I was diagnosed with diabetes almost four years ago my doctor checked my blood, said it was high and told me I am diabetic. He sent me off with no literature, no information, and no encouragement.
My wife had been waiting for me in the car and said I looked like a ghost. I had just been told I have a disease that could end up killing me – of course I looked pale.
I have this sneaky suspicion that I'm not the only one to have that kind of experience with a doctor that has absolutely no bedside manner or compassion for people on a deep level. Sure, doctors are passionate about what they do, but they seem to lack the people skills necessary to assist people emotionally to take on whatever it is they have just been diagnosed with.
Ever since my diagnosis with type-2 diabetes, I have wanted to do something to assist others like me who felt hopeless in their situation. That's what has led me to create this blog. On here you will not find the bad news. There's plenty of information out there in the world to give you the bad news. This site is where you'll find the good news and the information that will move you toward complete control and, if possible, elimination of all symptoms of diabetes.
That is my quest. Others have done it and I'm on my way their too. It can be done and it takes desire, change, and commitment. We all have to find what works for us. My promise to you is to stock this blog full of only the best information out there, both from my own experiences and from others.
Now, get to it.

For the Love of Food
I love food! Do you love food? Over the course of my life with diabetes, I have discovered one thing for certain – I am addicted to food, and more particularly, all the really bad kinds like candy, cakes, cookies, bread, potatoes, and everything else with a high glycemic load.
Am I alone in this addiction? I seriously doubt it. I believe most everything that traumatizes people in there lives is caused by some addiction or another or a combination of several addictions. Anytime I have struggled with diabetes I have been a victim of my own addictions – from food addictions to the emotional addictions that drive them. If people are going to control and eradicate disease from their lives they must control and eradicate their addictions first.

The tractor beam
My favorite movie of all time is Star Wars. In that movie, there is a something called a "tractor beam", which is a device used by space ships to pull in other space ships toward them for capture. It's kind of like using a magnet to attract a peace of metal.
No matter how strong-willed I feel, at any moment, there always seems to be a tractor beam like pull toward high carbohydrate, processed food. In Star Wars, when Han Solo and his ship, the Millennium Falcon, get caught in the tractor beam of the death star, Han solo says in his toughness, "There not going to get me without a fight!"
Although Obi Wan Kenobi informs Han Solo that there are alternatives to fighting, I believe when it comes to our food addictions we get to put up a fight. And, as Han Solo also says, "Bring it on, I prefer a straight fight to all this sneaking around!", we get to fight straight on in the face of our addictions.
And know this, the word addiction can have whatever feeling you attach to it. For most people, I would make the assumption that the word addiction has a negative feeling attached to it. It doesn't have to. YOU decide how it feels to you. If you have food addictions, big deal. Identify them and deal with them. Find what works for you and do it.
Take a moment today to identify the addictions in your life and fight them straight on.
